As I always say we are living in a world of packaging, sophistication, comfort and ease is the order of the day. This is why this business cannot suffer a set back.
Ground egusi business is not very popular the few you can see is in the market where market women and men who are into egusi business grind some of the egusi seed for sale to consumers who are always available to buy.
Because with this cooking soup becomes very simple and quick. The ground egusi is more purchased than the ungrounded ones. It is only people who buy in bulk that purchase ungrounded ones or those who are not ready to use it immediately.
WHY YOU SHOULD GO INTO GROUND MELONÂ BUSINESS
The demand for ground egusi is high.
People who are into the business are not many and are only in secluded areas such as in the markets and small shops. What happens to major malls, super food stores and the rest Meaning the competition in this business is low. Thereby giving opportunity for more returns.
You can easily make quick money in ground melon business and you will see the money in fact you can even see the profit before disposing them.
It is highly profitable. A cup of egusi seed of #200 when grounded will produce #400. What do you think when you buy them in bags. I will advice that you buy in bags for more profit.
HOW MUCH IS NEEDED FOR GROUND EGUSI BUSINESS
If you are starting small #20,000 is enough for a start at least is enough to buy quarter or half bag. But if you are starting large from #100,000 and above is good for a start.

PROCEDURE
- Use a well dried melon, when the egusi makes some noise or breaks easily when pressure is applied you can be sure it is completely dried.
- Grind them in big engine if you don’t have one then take it to commercial grinders to grind for you. Big engines will grind them to powder whereas other machines will make them sticky.
- Do not package immediately after grinding, spread them out for airing.
- Also don’t grind them down in large quantities, grind only the ones you can dispose quickly. Because the taste fades faster and you will be left with egusi that is sour or does not have a desired taste.
HOW TO PACKAGE EGUSI
Before you venture into packaging them you should have at least register a business name with CAC so you will be given time to do the business before involving Nafdac.
Use a strong nylon or a transparent container and package them.. Place a label on it. Some how, I wont say make it airtight because melon needs air to be in form.
WHERE TO BUY MELON IN NIGERIA FOR YOUR MELON BUSINESS
Nassarawa and Niger States are the major producers of melon in Nigeria. However, you can start large commercial melon farming in your start to cater for the high demands that are not always met. By now you should know that dry season melon is now possible.
MARKETABILITY IN MELON BUSINESS
Supply to super markets, super stores, shopping malls etc. Advertise online in other to get a wider coverage.
HOW TO PRESERVE GROUND EGUSI
Use a container and make melon into a paste with water and freeze it. This is for those who are preserving for consumption. For sellers just incase you couldn’t sell them quickly, wrap it loosely with nylon and store in the fridge.
OTHER WAYS OF DOING MELON BUSINESS ARE:
- Package ungrounded peeled melon seeds inside a nylon or container and supply to foodstuff stores.
- Buy egusi in bags from states where they are sold cheap, take them to your location and sell directly on wholesale prices to traders. Before starting find out ; where they get it from and how much they buy them.
After making your findings tell the people you want to be supplying them at a reduced price from the amount they usually get them. This way you will get more buyers down before starting.
You can start small even if it is with one bag, you are sure going to sell faster than other ways. When you are well established in this business you will be in position to be selling in bags to other sellers. By this time you will be buying a trailer load of egusi.
EGUSI STORAGE BUSINESS
In Nasarawa State you can buy from farmers at farm gate price during harvest. This you can do by using local purchase agent who will charge you a fee of #500 commission per bag for their service. You can pay for a space in the market store, for 3-4 months or more and resell them during off-peak period for good profits of about 100-300%.
The more bags you buy the higher the profits.
They are packed in different bags, the small bag can be bought at #14,000 in July-August and resell at #30,000 by November. You can sell them in March of the following year for #50,000.
You can store them in the same market you buy them and put in the care of an agent. Who in turn will notify you when to sell. Or you get a place from any area of your choice, it can be your house and store your purchased egusi seeds.
